Acne is a common skin problem seen on the face, chest and back that occurs with variable severity. It is caused by an increase in production of oil and keratin, and inflammation of the skin that clog the pores. There are two common types of acne; non-inflammatory, which is often associated with the presence of “whiteheads” or “blackheads” and inflammatory, which typically manifests as pustules and cystic lesions.
Acne can appear as early as age 9, but is most common during teenage years. The condition may also first appear after puberty and persist throughout adulthood for both men and women. Patients may complain of sensitive and painful lesions, especially if they are nodulocystic. Recurrent acne outbreaks and rupturing of cystic lesions can lead to scarring. Redness and discoloration after an acne breakout can take months to fade away.
Acne is a skin condition that requires clinical attention. A treatment regimen is necessary to achieve clear, healthy skin and varies from patient to patient. There are multiple treatment options available, including topical medications, oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives, Accutane (isotretinoin), intralesional injections, chemical peels, surgery and laser therapy.
We offer Cortisone Injection for quick clearing of pimples/blemishes well as other applications.
At Garden City Dermatology, we treat acne by assessing the patient’s skin type, medical history and current skin condition to determine the most effective treatment course.
